Citibank credit card

Forget gimmicks and daft names: Citibank is a serious firm, and the Citibank credit card is a serious credit card. Credit limits can be as high as £25,000 and the Platinum card comes with lots of extras; there's also a card that gives you lots of American Airlines Air Miles for future trips.

The Citibank credit card comes in three flavours: a basic Visa, a Platinum Visa with extra insurance as standard, and the Citi/AAdvantage card. The first two cards have standard APRs of 13.9% variable with 0% on purchases and balance transfers for the first six months, but the AAdvantage has a higher APR: 18.3%. However, while it does charge more interest the card gives you one American Airlines Mile for every pound you spend, so if you clear your balance each month it's a good way to rack up some free miles. You'll also get 5,000 bonus miles when you open an account, and the card includes emergency medical cover if bad luck strikes when you're travelling.

Although the miles you get with your Citibank credit card are for American Airlines, they entitle you to fly with any member of the One World alliance: British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Iberia, Quantas and so on. They can also be redeemed for hotel stays with various chains.
