The MBNA credit card is available in all kinds of guises: in addition to the usual standard and platinum cards, you can get a WWF or Breakthrough Breast Cancer charity card, cards from professional associations, or a card from your favourite football club.
Fancy an MBNA credit card? There's a huge selection to choose from: you can get an MBNA credit card that gives donations to breast cancer charities or the world wildlife fund, or one that helps support your favourite football team; you can even get one that's a perfectly normal credit card without any branding at all.
Although there are lots of variations, the MBNA credit card is effectively the same in each version: 15.9% APR on purchases and an introductory balance transfer rate of 0% for the first six months. The exception is the classic MBNA credit card, which has an interest rate of 17.9% APR.
Is the thought of helping a charity or football club enough to make the higher interest rate worthwhile? Probably not. For example, the breast cancer charities get £5 when you apply for your card and £2 for every year you have an account, together with 0.25% of the value of each purchase - so if you spend £5,000 in your first year, the charity only benefits by £17.50. You'd be better off going for a card with a lower rate and setting up a standing order to your chosen charity instead.
